Initiatives

At Jaypee we adhere to the concept of a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come, whilst achieving a stable economic development. With this focus in mind the Jaypee Group made a firm commitment to the epitome of environment protection.

Institutionalizing this Green Initiative
The Jaypee Group has constituted Project Groups at the project, regional and corporate centre level to carry out specific environmental related functions. These groups initiate and sustain measures to mitigate, monitor and control the impact of project implementation on the environment.

Jaypees initial footsteps in the construction industry were as Civil Engineers and EPC contractors. Over the years the group holds the distinction of securing 54% of the private hydropower projects in the country. Being a private player ion the hydro power sector, the Jaypees have secured three projects – Baspa II ,300 MW, Vishnu Prayag, 400 MW and Karcham Wangtoo a 1000 MW BOO basis project. All the three projects are Run – of – the – river projects, that helps conserve the ecological balance without any harm done to the flora or the fauna as these projects are devoid of any rehabilitation or resettlement issues. After the commissioning of the project at the respective project site plant tree saplings and nurture them to make the project site all neat and green.

Jaypee's in 1983 set up cement manufacturing facilities and are a leading producer of cement in its natural producing zone. Cement Industry is considered as one of the main polluting industries that harms the eco system. To conserve the mother nature and to stop environmental degradation the cement division boosts of an Environment Management Cell. The cell hosts a fully functional laboratory with modern equipment such as High Volume Samplers, Respirable Dust Samplers, Dust Fall Equipments, Noise Monitoring Equipment, Auto Weather Station, Blast Mate and other supporting equipments for monitoring the impact of cement operations on the environment.

Limestone - a key component in the manufacture of cement, the company mines it using the Computer Aided Deposit Evaluation or CADE with the help of Holder Bank Management Consultancy (HMC), Switzerland. The area for blast is scientifically selected erstwhile keeping environmental issues in mind. All sources of dust generation in the plant are well designed for producing minimum dust.

Resource Conservation
With better awareness of the ecology and our working environment, the Jaypee Group as, indeed, the rest of world – continually looks for innovative and cost - effective solutions to reduce wastes and preserve natural resources.

Some of the measures include :

  • Reduction in new land acquisition by optimal utilization of existing ones.
  • Capacity Addition to extant resources including land, machinery, infrastructure and human resource
  • Reduction in water and fuel consumption by recycling and the endorsing of more efficient combustion methods & state- of - the - art technology.

Afforestation Drive
At all sites, efforts are made to conserve the ecological balance without any harm done to flora or the fauna. After the commissioning of the project at the respective project site plants tree saplings and nurture them to make the project site all neat and green. The species planted in the area include Teak, Sisam, Babul, Jamun, Mahua, Neem, Peepal, Bargad, Guava, Mango and Amla.
A plantation drive is a whole year round drive that the group undertakes.
So far, planting around 1.5 lac trees has restored 83 hectares of back-filled area. In addition to this, massive plantation of over 4 lac trees has been done around the ‘cement complex’. A well-organized Horticulture Department under the guidance of professional Horticulturists looks after the plantation activity in and around the cement plant and the Mining areas.

Due to the heavy afforestation in the area, summer ambient Temperatures are normally around 2 degree lower than the surrounding areas. During the last five years it has also been observed that rain fall of this area has been improving by around 100 mm. on an annual basis

Water Harvesting & Water Quality
The mined out areas remain in balance after the backfilling of areas and their utilization as water reservoirs for rainwater harvesting. Garland drains around the mining areas are used to further charge these reservoirs. Three water reservoirs covering a 39 Hectare area have been developed in the Naubasta Mines with a 26 Lac M 3 water holding capacity.

Water harvesting and Garland Canal Scheme supported by the group has resulted in the creation of a huge man made lake having 35 Mn Cu mt of water storage at Rewa

The water reservoirs developed in the area have created a positive impact on the ground water levels resulting in an increase in the water table by about 3 to 4 Mtrs.

There are no effluents in water being disposed as these effluents are suitably neutralized in a neutralizing pit through an acid or alkali doze. The treated effluents are used for development /maintenance of Green belt.

A well equipped laboratory monitors and analyzes the water quality. Besides this a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) has also been set up.

Water Conservation
Adoption of enhanced modern technology and the up gradation of the cement plants operations have resulted in 90% Water saving by use of Air Cooled Condenser which requires only 350M 3/day as compared to Water Cooled Condenser having consumption of about 3500 M 3/Day

Air Quality Control
Ambient air quality is monitored on regular basis in core and buffer zone for SPM & RPM.

With installation of a properly designed fuel firing system the Carbon Mono Oxide & Sulpher di-oxide emission is negligible.

Noise Pollution
The noise pollution from turbine, fans centrifugal pumps electric motors etc is kept least with proper design below the permissible limit of 85 dB at 1 mt away from the source.
